The Bangweulu wetlands, is one of Africa’s most spectacular wildlife secrets. Home to over 100,000 black lechwe and the world’s most visible shoebill storks. the heart of the vast wetland is only accessible by canoe and days can be spent amongst the reed and Papyrus in search of a myriad of birds and Antelope including with luck the elusive Sitatunga. The region is steeped with history, this is where Livingstone finally ran out of medicine and died in search of the Nile source. Close by is Shiwa Ng'andu the colonial home of Sir Stewart Gore Brown,a fascinating window in to Zambia's past and a great place to spend a couple of days. Shiwa was the subject of the book 'The Africa House' .
Kasanka which sits to the South of the Marsh is Zambia's smallest national park yet famed for having over 400 bird species, as well as both the Tsessebe and Sitatunga antelopes, with careful conservation management the amount and variety of wildlife is constantly increasing how ever this is a safari destination for the more experienced safari goer looking for the unusual and or for birders who are always delighted at the species and overall peace and interest of Kasanka. Kasanka is home to one of the planets greatest wildlife spectacles when the annual migration of Straw colored fruit bats converge on the Kasanka swamps in December, see our Bats & Birds safari below for more detail or call for advise.
Note.. From June 2010 Scheduled flights will begin between Lusaka & Kasama makeing access to this area far easier and less expensive

After a day at Nkwali in the South Luangwa the group flies to Bangweulu Swamps, one of Zambia's special gems - with superb birding from all the water birds to the endangered wattled crane elegantly strolling around the plains. Of course the star attraction remains the extraordinary shoebill.

Some ten million bats foraging in the Kasanka fruit trees. Every year at the end of October 'Straw-Coloured Fruit Bats' congregate in the trees of the Mushitu swamp forest near the confluence of the Musola and Kasanka rivers in Kasanka National Park. The bats come to feed for a short six weeks on the abundance of seasonal fruit including wild loquat and waterberries. To see millions of bats dispersing at dusk against the setting sun is one of the wildlife wonders of Africa, and one that definitely shouldn’t be missed.
