On Arrival in Lusaka you will be met and transferred to a semi light aircraft for the journey south to the Royal airstrip in the Lower Zambezi valley where you will be met by one of the excellent guides from Chongwe who will drive you back to the river lodge and settle you in for the next four days game viewing in this beautiful piece of real Africa. Your guides will do their best to show you as much wildlife as possible providing a great insight in to the biodiversity and behaviour of game in this area.
Chongwe River Lodge is a family owned and run business dedicated not only to providing your dream safari experience but also hospitality that can only be found in a home. You do not have to even leave the camp to see and hear a wide variety of wildlife. Relaxing in the sitting out area over looking the river, one can see a constant procession of game coming down to drink as well as over 250 species of birds. Of the Lower Zambezi National Park, a four thousand square kilometre pristine sanctuary, teeming with game, and said to be one of the continents most picturesque wilderness areas. Accommodation at Chongwe is in luxury safari tents with two single beds or one double bed with en-suite bathrooms all with full view of the river and mountain. The bathrooms are ensuite, surrounded by a half stone and half grass wall for privacy. Constant hot water, the fine weather and ample shade allows for an open air / star lit shower at any time. A swimming pool is also available to cool off and relax in.
Although nothing is set in stone, a normal day may consist of an early morning walking safari or game drive followed by a brunch and then time to rest during the heat of the day. After high tea, a drive out to enjoy the afternoon and coming of night returning in the dark to a great dinner. Game drives are conducted day and night in the park. The likelihood of not seeing one other vehicle on a four-hour drive is very good.
All guides, when qualifying to guide in the area are lectured extensively on safari etiquette, there is no crowding at game sightings. This sense of remote wilderness is central to our operators’ ethics in the Lower Zambezi. You have the chance to walk accompanied by armed scouts. The area is richly populated with game and we often visit the picturesque Chongwe waterfalls where your guides will set up picnics and you can swim in the crocodile free pools above the falls.
The activity that the Lower Zambezi is most well known for is canoeing. It is a special experience for the nature lover but not something that we encourage for the more nervous client. Due to the nature of this activity, we use only the safest of routes and make sure the client is able bodied enough. There is still no better way to get close to elephants and other game that are drinking from the banks of the river because of the tranquil nature of this activity. Elephants will no doubt feature quite a lot during your stay as they frequently spend time in camp as well as being encountered on game drives in addition to many other spectacular creatures.
Chongwe River Camp is situated on the confluence of the Chongwe and Zambezi Rivers, directly opposite Mana Pools. A policy of non-intrusive enjoyment of wildlife and low environmental impact has preserved the area and its wildlife. The Lower Zambezi has become one of southern Africa's premier destinations for peaceful game viewing. Under a complete canopy of huge Winterthorn Acacias, the camp occupies an unrivalled location, used twice by David Livingstone on his travels, as did Courtney Selous, when he hunted in this, his favourite wilderness.
Be warned! Chongwe River Camp is a luxury 'bush camp' situated in a wilderness area; elephant are more numerous than people in the Albida grove. There are no fences and the animals have complete right of way. The camp itself looks onto the confluence of the two rivers and the mountains of the escarpment to the north. The Chongwe River is the boundary.
Camp is open from 1st April to 15th November. The weather is warm and dry from April to September with cool nights.
Warm clothing is needed for night drives. September to the end of November is hot and dry with the occasional shower at the end of November.
As a dedicated wildlife safari operator we at Busanga chose Chongwe as they spearhead a project with the UNDP and local community to reclassify hunting land. Chongwe are a safari Camp where learning about the African bush with good guides remains the most important element of a safari.
