FAMILY SAFARIS

Busanga safaris is able to arrange some great family safaris. There is a great choice and costs can vary widely so instead of offering set itineraries we would suggest that you read the following and let us know by phone or email what your ideal would be. Inform us of the size and age of your family - also dates and budget would be very helpful - and we will put together something suitable just for you and your family.

Across Africa, there are relatively few lodges in big game areas which are really family-friendly, but Zambia's 'safari houses' are. They run with their own guide, activities and chef and they stand out for offering not only great safaris for small groups of adults, but also for opening up some of Africa's wilder areas to families.

Many of Zambia's safari camps are small and run directly by their owner – some of whom will have children, or at least have brought up their own children there. Because of this, these can be very welcoming to families.  Safari houses typically come with between two and four bedrooms, and are self-contained with their own kitchen (chef provided), own 4WD for safaris (with professional guide), so you and your family can set your own safari schedule – to sleep, eat and game-view when you want to do so.

The spectacular Chongwe River House was made for fun family safaris. It's very stylish and totally original, with not a straight line in the whole house. Chongwe House centres around a vast lounge-dining area, and of this are four large bedrooms (all en-suite), a kitchen, plenty of space and a large outdoor deck and swimming pool. It's one of Africa's best family safari camps – perfect for a group travelling together – and comes with its own chef and safari guide.

Having brought their own children up at Tafika, John and Carole Coppinger do welcome families at Tafika – although for families with younger children (under 12), we need to check in advance. The camp's suite is particularly well-suited to small families, as it has two adjoining bedrooms which share a large bathroom.

Another option that provides good value and a private family Safari can be found at Kafunta river lodge in the South Luangwa, family owned and run (with their young boy Luke) it is also regarded as one of Africa's best wildlife areas. The family chalet can take parents and 2 or 3 children and activities and meal times can be arranged to suit, game drives can be enjoyed together, other wildlife / nature activities to interest  and stimulate the children are arranged and  can include visits to villages and schools.

Similar experience and facilities can be found at Kasaka River lodge in the lower Zambezi. This is another exceptional, friendly, family run safari lodge with the added benefit of river activities (fishing). A very popular safari includes combining these two lodges for the complete safari experience for parents and kids.
