$3100 pp 7 nights mid January to early April Inc domestic flights.
When the rivers and lagoons of the Luangwa valley are brimming, the bush in its fullest flush of growth and wildlife is in abundance. Magnificent sky-scapes and sunsets, a wealth of migratory birds, crystal clear night skies and occasional dramatic tropical downpours form the backdrop, providing a unique and unforgettable safari experience for photographers and wildlife or bird enthusiasts alike. With walking, driving and boating available, the opportunity to see the birds and animals of the South Luangwa at this time of plenty is not to be missed.
You will be able to stay at ‘Kapani’ an exclusive camp situated on the banks of one of the Luangwa River's many ox-bow lagoons. It is located close to the main Mfuwe area of the South Luangwa. It is a luxury safari lodge, accommodating just twenty guests and is open throughout the year. This is an ideal place from which to start your Zambian safari experience. Above all else the wildlife game viewing in the area close to this camp is as good as you will find anywhere in Zambia, if not Africa. And ‘Kakuli’ Zambia's only true Bush camp open at this time of year is a seasonal bush camp on the confluence of the Luwi and Luangwa rivers. For many it marks the end of a walking safari from camp to camp following the course of the Luwi River. Whether Kakuli is used as a stopover in the middle of a walking trail or as a base for a more static wildlife safari, the game viewing and night drive safaris in this area are some of the best in Zambia. There are five spacious, traditional safari tents under shady thatched roofs, each with an open-air bathroom. All of the tents overlook the river with stunning views up and down this hippo-packed stretch of the Luangwa.
Day 1 (Kapani Lodge) Kapani Standard Suite On arrival at Mfuwe Airport (generally via Lusaka), you will be met by your guide and transferred to Kapani Lodge, usually arriving in time for brunch. Game viewing this evening will be by vehicle leaving camp around 4pm. You will stop for sundowners in the Park. The second half of the drive is conducted after dark in search of nocturnal species. You will then return to camp at around 7:30pm in time for dinner.
Day 2 (Kapani Lodge) Kapani Morning Fire You wake early and gather around the campfire for a light breakfast whilst watching the sun rise over the lagoon. The game drive this morning will last for three to four hours bringing you back to camp for a hearty brunch and allowing time afterwards for relaxation in your room or by the pool before the afternoon drive, which again will return after dark.
Day 3 (Kapani Lodge) Again a full day to explore the central Mfuwe section of the South Luangwa National Park, known as one of Southern Africa's most densely populated wildlife areas. Your outings from Kapani will be by both vehicle and by boat.
Day 4 (Kakuli Camp) Boat and Camps This morning you will venture out by boat onto the main Luangwa River as you are transferred for about an hour up-stream and to Kakuli Camp. Whilst on this journey you begin to realise what a rare treat you are enjoying. Only very few people get the opportunity to explore the Luangwa by boat and as you proceed up river you become aware just how remote you are. This is a true African Adventure.
Day 5 (Kakuli Camp) Flooded Ebonies Game viewing from Kakuli at this time of year is either by boat or on foot as vehicular access is not possible. You will explore inlets and flooded lagoons, floating into magical ebony forests knowing there is no one for miles around. There are a number of well-drained, sandy areas close to camp where we walk. As dry ground is at a premium this time of year, these areas are well populated with animals providing some excellent game viewing opportunities.
Day 6 (Kakuli Camp) Boat Another full day of exploring the various river systems around Kakuli, perhaps a picnic lunch will be packed in the boat to allow further exploration into previously uncharted territory.
Day 7 (Kapani Lodge) Today you will return downstream to Kapani Lodge for your final night before flying out of the Luangwa Valley.
