Welcome to the wonderful Kafue national park in western Zambia. And our very popular 9 night safari.
We arrange this safari as a set date escorted departure a few times each season or you can enjoy the itinerary on dates that suit you unescorted but with our assurance that everything is carefully planned for you from start to finish. Whether looked after by our colleagues in this collection of small privately owned safari camps or escorted throughout by one of our team who have a passion for the Kafue and great deal of safari experience in the region, they will ensure that you do not have anything to concern yourself with, apart from getting the best possible photos of the varied and interesting wildlife we aim to encounter on this unusual and interesting safari.
Many parts of Africa claim to offer a ‘real Africa’ experience and a unique opportunity to visit an untamed wilderness, but few can compare with Kafue National Park. At over 22,000km2, you get the feeling we have the entire park all to ourselves. These varied and interesting safaris explore a variety of the Kafue's eco systems. The Miombo woodland and rivers and the vast Busanga Plains. Staying at three really relaxed and informal safari camps where friends are easily made and the wildlife is interesting and varied. At each camp you will be guided by some of the Kafue's best and most experienced. Searching out the wildlife and birds that abound here, but you will also have the chance to just sit and watch as game comes and goes on the plains and to the rivers between exciting and interesting day and night time game drives or walking safaris.
On arrival at Lusaka Airport you will transfer by car to the Kafue, the journey takes around 3 to 4 hours, the road is in good condition and having arrived at Mukambi River Lodge you will be settled into this very comfortable lodge on the southern edge of the Northern sector of the park, situated between the lightly wooded tree line and the Kafue riverbank. With large shady trees and views both upstream and downstream which are magnificent. You have the chance to take part in a game drive or river journey during the afternoon and evening in search of Leopard and other abundant wildlife. The following day you can enjoy game drives or river safaris in the morning and afternoon, Linda (the manager) will be happy to arrange your choice and make sure you enjoy your stay. Camp has some resident wildlife including, African wild cat, warthogs and even a Hippo
The safari heads north up onto the Busanga Plains to “The Plains Camp”, a tiny bush camp nestled in a stand of trees in the middle of this important ecosystem. The Plains Camp is a classic safari camp comprising of just a few, very spacious and comfortable Meru safari tents tastefully furnished, complete with en-suite bathrooms, open to the sky with canvas bucket showers. Each tent has its own private veranda best enjoyed during day-light hours as at night wildlife often wanders through camp. Meals are eaten in a tented dining room / lounge on a raised teak deck with comfortable furniture. Here hot tea and biscuits can be found before an early morning drive. Very good quality meals are enjoyed with the camp manager and other guests served on a beautiful polished wood table whilst enjoying the open view across the plains, dotted with wildlife.
A campfire is lit in the evening as a gathering place before or after a day game viewing.
After 3 nights we leave camp by 4x4 to rendezvous with a long boat from 'Hippo Lodge' which takes us south-east up the Kafue river for around 3 hours to Hippo Lodge, this journey nearly always generates spectacular wildlife sightings.
On arrival at Hippo you will immediately be struck by the warm welcome and friendliness of the staff. The atmosphere here is completely relaxed and informal. Hippo is a small safari camp which is managed by the Kafue's most experienced guides, who have contributed to wildlife protection in the Kafue for many years. For the next three nights you will be staying in one of Hippo’s small stone cottages, full of bush character with an en-suite bathroom or in one of their spacious and airy safari tents with en-suite.
There is a simple but comfortable thatched dining/lounge room which looks out onto the river, and a bar/sitting room close to a small swimming pool in which to cool and get a tan whilst keeping your binos close at hand. Trained staff create some great meals from the camp kitchen although dinner can be interrupted by an impromptu drive out if a Lion is calling near to camp.
In true safari style Hippo does not have electric lights so you will depend on paraffin lanterns and torches.
Game drives at Hippo are by open 4x4 vehicles, on extensive loops of bush tracks east of the river and are arranged in the early morning before the heat sucks the wildlife into the shade, or late afternoon/night. As dusk falls the hunt is on to track down the elusive cats. Game viewing from boat is very pretty with rapids just up stream which can also be spectacular.
We will explore the small idyllic wooded islands in the Kafue River which are entirely different bush experiences that guests never fail to enjoy. There is a natural hot spring, situated about a kilometer from the lodge, providing guests with a perfect opportunity to unwind and rejuvenate in a unique sand bottomed natural Jacuzzi – bathing at the spring is one of the most unusual safari activities we have ever encountered and a BBQ dinner alongside the spring, under the starry African sky, makes for an unforgettable evening.
We finally leave the Kafue for Lusaka where the safari ends with a last night at Pioneer camp near Lusaka. Staying in a very comfortable en-suite cottage.
The next morning is another early start to drive 20 min to the airport to catch your home ward flight.
