An adventurous small group escorted safaris with a maximum of just 6 guests. Which explores Zambia's Luangwa Valley from the far south to the remote north, encountering as much of the prolific wildlife of the South Luangwa as possible.
Named after the Mopane tree which is such a feature of the Valley. The safari suits more active guests who want to get to see as much game as possible but also get out of the vehicle and in to the bush. Zambian guides at each camp are all experts who posses great knowledge and enthusiasm for the wildlife and flora found in the valley, all are from the local communities.
You will have the chance to enjoy day and night time game drives in open 4x4s giving you opportunities to observe and photograph the valleys incredibly varied and numerous wildlife species and you will enjoy some of the very best walking safaris in Africa, your armed guides will point out the signs as you walk quietly through the bush. It is an incredible feeling, senses are heightened you become aware of every nuance - from the tiny scratches in the sand made by the long quills of a porcupine, or the pungent aroma of fresh elephant dung to the call of Oxpeckers hinting that big game is close by.
The safari will stay in three camps during the safari ranging from a beautiful river lodge in the key Mfuwe region to a rustic Island bush Camp in the remote south of the Valley and a classic wilderness safari camp in the achingly wild north Luangwa where walking safaris are a key feature of the wildlife watching. All sharing one thing in common: great wildlife.
The exploration starts with a flight in to the valley from Lusaka. You will spend a couple of days at Kafunta River lodge overlooking a drying flood plain towards the Luangwa river. With game always in site grazing on the plain and visiting the permanent stream if front of camp, and adjacent to the Mfuwe sector of the south Luangwa, a pontoon just minuets from camp gives us access to the less visited area's which generate simply amazing Leopard sightings with sometime several cats on each evening game drive, (of course not guaranteed!).
Three days are spent at island camp in the far south of the Luangwa, exploring mostly on foot in the woodland and drying oxbow lagoons (dambos) of the far south, camp is very rustic but comfortable, guests stay in open fronted chalets (ensuite) which look directly on to the river and inevitably a great numbers of hippo and other visiting game. Then the safari heads north by game drive and then by a light aircraft to Mwaleshi in the stunningly wild and remote North Luangwa for three nights on the crystal clear Mwaleshi River in the heart of the park. The remote setting of this very comfortable yet wonderfully remote camp adds to the real wilderness experience.
Mwaleshi Camp will be our base for the next few days from where we will discover the wilderness on foot. Driving/walking combinations will take us to other parts in the north Luangwa.
Where as one client put it "each day was to be like the last, lion, lion everywhere and 100% addictive." This is big game country where Lions and Buffalo are constantly at odds and endemic wildebeest & zebra are still not used to seeing people.
Finally we fly from Mwaleshi Airstrip to Mfuwe, this 45 minute flight offer a further opportunity to view the mighty Luangwa River from the air. You will then head back to Luska to stay at the simple and comfortable Piuoneer Camp which is well placed for an early morning transfer to the Airport on day 10.
