We love to arrange safaris to really remote and interesting places and where possible get you out and about amongst the wildlife and this safari is just about as good as it gets. Just imagine paddling gently between lush papyrus grasses silently as Elephant feed close by. The Selinda Spillway is an ideal setting for this canoeing and walking adventure trail, which winds along the river for four days, camping along the banks of the river wherever you find yourself at the end of the day.
The canoe trail is a highly rewarding experience for those who have imagined the idea and decided to partake in an adventure.
The route begins in the north-east of the Okavango Delta and travels eastwards along the Selinda Spillway through the private 120 000-hectare (300 000-acre) Selinda Reserve towards the Kwando and Linyanti rivers close to where Selinda and Zarafa Camps are located.
The three-night/four-day safari covers approximately 45km while the nights are spent in fly camps along the way, set up wherever the canoeists end up. Camps are set in prime, shady sites from whhich to explore remote and secret corners of the bush. The days are spent paddling eastwards along the Spillway, stopping whenever there is something of interest to be seen along the banks, such as the many wildlife and bird species found in the area.
The area is well known for elephant, buffalo, sable antelope, roan antelope and wild dog, while cheetah, lion, leopard and variety of other species are also found. The Selinda is also a birding paradise with some 300 species or more to be seen. With many males trying to claim the territory around the Tshwene area, lions are often seen and are very vocal at night.
Each canoeing day begins at first light when the Spillway is at its most peaceful. After an early coffee and snack, we set off for the day's adventure. Walking is part of the experience. If there happens to be activity that warrants investigation, the guide will stop on the banks and take a short walk into the bush. A brunch will be taken around mid-morning and light snacks will be available throughout the day for sustenance until dinner.
At the end of the three-day canoe trail, guests transfer to the Selinda Airstrip at around midday for departure or may elect to stay on for an additional night at either Zarafa or Selinda camps for a celebratory night after the three-day adventure.
Day 1:
The trail begins at Selinda airfield in the mid-afternoon, with a transfer from the airstrip to the starting point of the actual canoe trail. Once the guide has briefed the group, the trail starts with a short late afternoon canoe experience before arriving at the evening's first camp.
As there is a minimal distance to be covered on the first day and also due to the fact that all the equipment is carried with the group, we paddle until we are ready to stop, just before sunset, at a suitable site on the banks of the Spillway.
The dome-tented camp is erected and we enjoy a well-deserved sundowner around the campfire before dinner, followed by a good night's sleep.
Day 2:
After an early wake-up call, tea or coffee and light breakfast while the camp is being dismantled, we head out on the canoes for a full day of paddling, with lunch en route and the possibility of stretching our legs if we come across something worth investigating on foot. Tonight we camp in another suitable location as we gradually make our way down the Spillway.
Day3:
An early breakfast once again, as camp is taken down, before we continue along the water course by canoe for another full-day excursion and set up camp for the last night of this trail.
Day 4:
We head out after breakfast, aiming to finish at around 10H00-10H30. At this point we are met by the vehicle and transferred by road to the Selinda airstrip, where we bid farewell to the safari.
Notes:
At the start or end This canoeing safari will start and end at Selinda Airfield at around midday. Unless guests are arriving on a private charter, it is essential that guests have spent at least a night in northern Botswana beforehand, guests arriving directly off the Air Botswana flight will not have enough time to join the start of the safari. A night at Selinda or Zarafa or any other Okavango or Linyanti camp is recommended beforehand and afterwards and we can help arrange that based on your travel plans and budget, just ask.
