Our 5 or 7 nights Bush Experience safari package gives our guests the opportunity to combine the comfort and luxury of Kafunta with the rustic beauty of the Island Bush camp.
These safaris receive good feed back for guests for the great wildlife viewing potential and because the combination of lodge and bush camping makes for a real wilderness safari experience.
Suitable for a first time safari or regular safari goers looking to get away from the main tourist routes. You will visit the best game viewing areas of the South Luangwa's Mfuwe and the remote Mopane woodlands and drying river heaving with Hippo in the far south. Busanga safaris Tony & Tyrone have both worked & managed Island Bush camp and have a soft spot for these camps, as usual we would suggest you call for a chat about this safari idea.
The safari begins on arrival in Lusaka where you will transfer on to a short flight to Mfuwe in the heart of the Luangwa valley, here you will be met by your guide who will drive you (1 hour) to the bush during the last half of the drive you can expect your first wildlife encounters.
The first days are spent at Kafunta River Lodge, A small safari lodge with a very good reputation for service and quality guiding, where guest stay in very comfortable thatched chalets, with super en suite bathrooms and private veranda’s. Kafunta is situated on the banks of the Luangwa and overlooks a flood plain which in the dry season provides grazing around a permanent water hole, this attracts herbivores from Impala to Elephant also some great birds and after dark predators can some times be seen in the shadows. There is a main dining area and a shady bar also a small pool and uniquely a naturally occurring hot spring.
Early morning and afternoon/ evening game drives in to the South Luangwa’s more of beat areas provide simply wonderful wildlife sightings and your guides who have a vast amount of experience will ensure you get the best possible photo opportunities. Game drives are always in open vehicles and as darkness falls your guide will use spotlights in search of Leopards and a myriad of other nocturnal animals. The central location of Kafunta River Lodge allows us to explore vast areas of South Luangwa National Park.
A 4 hour drive from Kafunta River Lodge through remote wilderness across the heart of the national park takes you to Island Bush Camp in the very south of the national park. Island Bush Camp is re built each season from natural, locally sourced materials, and the chalets are set along the banks of the Luangwa River.
This exciting camp is the base for the next part of your safari where watching wildlife on interesting and safari walking safaris with you guide and armed rangers will give you a different perspective of the bush, walks usually last around 2 or 3 hours and are gentle strolls geared around the guests , sometime driving from cap to walk back or visa versa , back in camp you are still in the bush and afternoons can be spent in the shade of your chalet watching the Hippos jostle for position and game of all types coming to drink from the river. The camp offers rustic accommodation in grass/reed huts build on stilts that ensure safety from wild animals and provide an unlimited view of the Luangwa River. Each chalet has it's own en-suite bathroom, with running water, flushing toilets and hot bucket showers.
Returning to Kafunta River Lodge, you spend the last part of your safari in the comforts of the lodge where you are able to participate in more game drives. Before finally heading back to Lusaka and a night in Pioneer Camp before your on forward journey or homeward flight.
