An exceptional wildlife journey encompassing the very best remote wildlife areas of Tanzania, bringing together the Plains game and the Chimpanzees of the Mahale mountains. Seamlessly arranged using light aircraft to get guest around in the most convenient way and staying in some spectacular safari properties.
Day 1 – 4 Ruaha River Lodge:
The flight to Ruaha departs at 10:30 and lands around midday. Ruaha National Park is the largest Park in Tanzania and lies in the centre of the country. This beautiful park has an abundance of wildlife in an array of sceneries which gives it a character all of its own. The Great Ruaha River is the lifeline of the park as it is the only permanent water source in the park. A full day game drive along the river takes you over rocky kopjes, home to the Greater kudu, Roan antelope and elephant, and winds down along the river bank through open plains, perfect for cheetah and lion, herds of buffalo, warthogs, jackals, bat eared Foxes – the list is endless. The river banks are rich with birdlife, hippos and crocs. For the more adventurous, above the escarpment lives the more elusive Sable Antelope. Ruaha is not only the largest park but can also boast a well developed road network, so there are plenty of different drives to explore for morning game drives returning the lodge for lunch. An afternoon spent on your veranda at the water’s edge, or sitting in one of the 2 bar areas will be an equally enjoyable part of your safari here where the animals wander in front of your room to come down to drink. An afternoon drive to the hippo pool to catch the sunset makes a perfect end to a day.
Days 4 – 7 Kungwe Camp Mahale Mountains:
Kungwe Beach Lodge is a small tented camp with a friendly atmosphere, sited below the Kungwe Mountain the highest in the Mahale Mountains. With good food and excellent guiding, it is in the best position to trek for the chimps, and has a lovely beach front for sunbathing, swimming, snorkelling and boat safaris. The lake water is so clear that you can actually see hippos walking along the lake floor under the boat! The camp is an hours boat ride from the airstrip.full board accommodation,1 chimp trek (1hour viewing) per full day, 1 boat trip, soft drinks and water, boat transfer from airstrip to camp to airstrip. Children under 12 are not permitted to trek for chimps and can’t be left in camp unattended.
Days 7- 11 Katavi Wildlife Camp:
An early start from Ruaha gets you in the air by 0700 en route to the far west of Tanzania. A dramatic backdrop to Lake Tanganyika, Mahale Mountains are home to some 1000 chimpanzees, 60 of which are habituated. Watching these apes groom and play is the most rewarding experience. Whilst viewing is strictly controlled to 1 hour in total per day, it is well worth it. The trekking can be strenuous, although at some times of year (notably September time) the chimps do come right down to the water’s edge to eat the fruit growing there.
The flight to Katavi leaves at 0940 so you leave camp after breakfast. The flight takes around 40 minutes and takes you over miles and miles of empty Africa – this flight really emphasises the size of the country! These flights only operate on Mondays and Thursdays.Katavi National Park is a truly remote wild park with vast herds grazing the plains that characterize the park. Shown as ‘Lakes’ on the map, these open expanses become swampy during the long rains, but dry out for 6 months of the year. The animals are concentrated on a smaller and smaller area as the park dries out thus the large herds of buffalo, zebra, giraffe and topi to name a few. The Katuma River shrinks into small pools which becomes home to ever more hippos, resulting in the highest concentrations of hippos found in Tanzania. The dwindling river also exposes the caves that the crocs use to store their prey underwater, watching them in these caves is a fascinating experience. The plains are surrounded with woodland, where the predators lie in wait for the return of their prey from the grazing land. With such abundant food sources, the lions are some of the most kingly seen in Tanzania. All in all a Katavi safari is an un miss able adventure.

Day 11: Depart after breakfast for the flight through to Dar. This flight will stop in Ruaha for refuelling.

 Notes:
1 chimp trek (1hour viewing) per full day, 1 boat trip, soft drinks and water, boat transfer from airstrip to camp to airstrip. Children under 12 are not permitted to trek for chimps and can’t be left in camp unattended.
