A comprehensive 12 day safari taking you to two of Zambia’s key wildlife areas to explore a variety of habitats and provide you with the chance to see a great variety of wildlife species and enjoy the simply beautiful contrasting landscapes of the Kafue National park and the South Luangwa. You will stay in small family owned safari lodges and camps throughout, enjoying extremely comfortable accommodation and great meals in stunning locations. You will be able to take part in game drives during the day and at nights, river journeys and walking safaris, guided throughout by very experienced wildlife guides.
This itinerary has proved very popular with previous guests and we recommend it very highly. Please call us for more information (below you will find a sightings list for this safari taken in Sept 2010).
Day 1: On arrival at Lusaka airport you will be met by a driver from Mukambi River lodge who will be waiting for you immediately as you leave the arrivals hall, after customs. From the airport you will begin your journey to the Kafue. On arrival at Mukambi you will be settled into your chalet and will have plenty of time to enjoy a game drive or river journey before dinner and a restful night.
Day 2: Today your safari will take you across the Kafue national park to ‘The Plains camp’, passing through game rich areas as you head north to the Busanga Plains, the drive will take around 4 hours subject to local conditions, you will experience a dramatic change in environment as Mopane woodland gradually gives way to the vast plains. The next 3 nights you will be staying in a very comfortable safari tent overlooking the plains, your days are spent exploring the plains and locating the wildlife of the Busanga on early morning and afternoon game drives.
Day 5: Today sees you return south across the Kafue roughly following the Kafue River where with luck you will see a variety of wildlife including antelope species typical to the area, such as Hartebeest and Waterbuck.
At Mukambi you will again settle into a chalet, refresh and enjoy more wildlife watching. The game in this area is very varied and has a high population of predators with very frequent sightings of Lion and Leopard seen close to and sometimes in camp.
Day 6: This morning you depart Mukambi, after a drive to the airport in Lusaka (3 hours). Depart 11.50am on Proflight 800.
On arrival in Mfuwe you will be met from the plane by a guide from ‘Kafunta’ and will begin the drive to the lodge, this takes around an hour passing thru Mfuwe town and towards the South Luangwa national park, you can expect to see game on your drive to camp. A cool drink and the chance to absorb the great position of Kafunta which overlooks the dry river course which attracts wildlife, then you will be shown your chalet to freshen up and enjoy a leisurely lunch before an afternoon/evening game drive before dinner and bed after a long day.
Days 6 & 7: At Kafunta start with a dawn wake up and a drive into the Luangwa with your guide in search of the prolific wildlife in the area, returning to the Lodge around mid morning for brunch and relax looking out on the river plain with cameras/binos to hand. Afternoon tea (and cake) precedes an afternoon drive stopping along the way for a sun downer and to set up the spotlight to enable us to search out the nocturnal creatures of the Luangwa. Reaching camp, depending on the sightings, in time for dinner.
Days 8 - 9 & 10: Today you journey south across the National park, to stay at Island Bush Camp, sitting on the banks of the Luangwa River amongst Mopane woodland and open clearings, here for the next days you will explore on exciting and interesting walking safaris. Led by your guide and an armed ranger, walking safaris usually last around 3 or 4 hours and can generate some large mammal sightings but also reveal the smaller creatures and a chance to learn more about the greater picture of the bush.
Day 11: Today you return to Kafunta on a game drive across the Luangwa, to relax and enjoy a last game drive.
Day 12: After a morning game drive and brunch you have chance to relax before we depart Kafunta for Mfuwe airport to catch the Proflight 803 at 16.40, on arrival in Lusaka we will be met by a driver from Pioneer camp. This is an informal but comfortable property where you can relax and enjoy a relaxed dinner and a good night's sleep ahead of your flight home.
Day 13: Depart Pioneer at 06.00 for the short drive to the airport. Where you board your flight home or connect with the next part of your safari.
