Tyrone first saw the plains when he was 10 years old. Now with 12 years experience visiting and working on safari across Zambia and in particular the Kafue the Busanga plains, and with a hon's Degree in Wildlife Conservation. Tyrone's enthusiasm and passion for wildlife is well known and his period as manager at 'Island Bush Camp' in the South Luangwa and subsequently at The Plains camp drew many plaudits from guests and the safari industry and the beginning of a recognition which will see him follow in the steps of some of the best known in the safari game.
in 2012, you can enjoy safaris led by Tyrone that stay at the Plains camp as part of longer safaris that explores and uncover the nature of the Kafue.
'The Plains Camp', this small tented classically authentic safari bush camp sits on an island of Fig trees and palms in the north of the plains in a prime wildlife location.
Guests (10 at most) are immediately made to feel at home to absorb the unique atmosphere of the plains and enjoy the hospitality and enthusiasm of the most experienced team of guides and naturalists on the plains
There are just 5 tastefully appointed Meru safari tents each with a private area to relax with bino's close to hand and an adjoining open air ensuite where hot bucket showers can be taken whilst overlooking the vast plains.
At the start or end of a day exploring the unique wildlife of the Plains our visitors enjoy informal chat (and some times more! * ),around the camp fire or can relax in the canvas tented teak decked dining room which is raised to give a wonderful outlook. Brilliant meals cooked by talented bush chefs add enormously to a stay at Plains Camp.
The Busanga plains is a very special place. For much of the year the area is mostly submerged below seasonal flood waters, dotted with islands of acacia and fan palms. In June when the waters subside a vast open grassland plain is revealed, dissected in places by streams and gullies, impossible to navigate without experience and local knowledge. The lush grazing draws great herds of game on to the plains and now the islands become the home of Lions who scan the plains for game. The variety of wildlife on the Busanga Plains (At the foot of the page you will find a sighting report from a Kafue safari in sept 2010) is surprising with opportunities to see some very unusual antelope including with luck, Sitatunga and Sable. Here predators abound, there are Lion of course but also Wild dog and Leopard, Serval and maybe, just maybe, Caracal! changes in wildlife behavior as a result of reduced poaching threat is typified by the appearance of a breeding heard of Elephant on the open Busanga where previously only old Bulls would be seen crossing undercover of darkness. Tyrone spent many hours sitting with the new heard gently habituating them to the sight and sound of vehicles and although requiring special care and not always relaxed it is a massive step in the right direction for the Kafue.
And the Birdlife? Wattled Cranes, swirling towers of Open Billed Storks, in the grass Coucal and Rosy Throated Longclaws are just a few of the myriad birds in the Kafue and alone worthy of a visit.
And what wont you see? many other people! The plains still only have a small number of camps in the whole vast 750km2 .
Notes:
We have a choice of safari ideas which include a stay at the Plains Camp or which incorporate some other hand picked camps in other areas of the Kafue such as Hippo Lodge which provide the visitor with a well rounded Kafue safari experience. We can also suggest safaris which combine Plains camp with The Luangwa Valley (including "Island bush camp, another exciting bush camp and managed by Tony McKeith) two areas which compliment each other perfectly for a more comprehensive Zambian safari.
Our suggested safari rates include all transfers starting and ending in Lusaka, all inc meals and drinks, park fees.
We will always Endeavour to avoid single supplements, this is often possible but subject to space availability. Just ask and we will do our best.
