Mana Pools - Wild Dog Safari                   Video from our latest Wid dog Safari

As the name of this safari suggests the main focus of this safari is the elusive and enigmatic African Wild Dog. Our specialist guides experiences on safari over many years, spending a great deal of time in the company of the Wild dog packs that roam the bush in Zimbabwe’s Mana Pools National Park enables us to offer our guests what we expect will be the most realistic chance to encounter Wild Dogs, to witness there very natural behaviour and learn about this fascinating carnivore in the company of Doug MacDonald, one of Africa’s very best safari Guides.
Although with Wild Dogs as the target species no opportunity will be missed to see and enjoy time with the plethora of other animals and birds which we will encounter during this exceptional 9 night safari.

Doug MacDonald is a fully qualified, professional safari guide who lives in Zimbabwe with his wife and two sons. Doug has a well earned reputation for his knowledge and professionalism and his very personalised style which ensures a relaxed and informal safari experience and provides a real ‘under the skin’ experience of the bush.

This Wild Dog Safari Arranged specifically for Busanga Safaris, Doug who will take you on a journey to his favourite destination Mana Pools. Planned for early June when during a new moon phase  will hopefully allow for more activity during the daylight hours and this is when the dogs should be denning, and we will try and find those dens.

Mana a wildlife conservation area in northern Zimbabwe constituting a National Park. It is a region of the lower Zambezi River where the flood plain turns into a broad expanse of lakes after each rainy season. As the lakes gradually dry up and recede, the region attracts many large animals in search of water, making it one of Africa's most renowned game-viewing regions.

You will explore on games drives with the chance to get out and stretch you legs and get a real feel and small for the bush. You will also have the chance to walk (if you wish). The nature of the camps means that even between  activities you will still be in the environment.
You will stay in three contrasting safari camps in different locations chosen to provide the broadest possible experience. Combining two permanent but very authentic safari camps and four nights in a private mobile safari camp which will be positioned at the time of the safari close to the Mana Flood Plain. through out you can expect very comfortable accommodation, exceptional food and great company.

Mana means ‘four’ in Shona, in reference to the four large permanent pools formed by the meanderings of the middle Zambezi. These 2,500 square kilometres of river frontage, islands, sandbanks and pools, flanked by forests of mahogany, wild figs, ebonies and baobabs, is one of the least developed National Parks in Southern Africa. It has the country’s biggest concentration of hippo and crocodiles and large dry season mammal populations of elephant and buffalo and Wild dogs !

18 June
To allow you to get over your intentional flight to Harare we will arrange for your first night to be spent at. Guinea Fowl Lodge. Doug Will meet you from your flight and after a warm welcome will get you checked in.

19  & 20 June
Having met your fellow  guests, You will be driven by Doug to Mana Pools.
Kavinga Camp is on the Rukomechi River near the Zambezi Escarpment - The camp is a small permanent camp, built on a high bank overlooking the dry Rukomechi River - however there are a number of water points in the river bed dug by elephants and a permanent pool of water that is maintained by borehole and so keeping water available all year to draw in the animals. The rooms are canvassed walled with steel roofs set on platforms all en suite flush loos and with solar panels for water heating. There is a central dining area with upstairs viewing platform.  Walks - Drives and Night drives are available here.

21 - 22 - 23 - 24 & 25 june
A game drive today will take you to your base for the next four nights. A truly classic safari experience. You will be extremely well looked after by Doug and his team. Staying in super comfortable tents with private ensuite facilities. Expect hearty breakfasts and light lunches of fresh produce, Aperitifs around the camp fire followed by great meals are enjoyed with you fellow guests under the stars.  Sleep comes very easily  serenaded by the sounds of the bush all around you. Deep in the bush you can expect visits from the wildlife that are at home here in the Zimbabwean wilderness. Highlights here could include tracking on foot a pride of
lions or one of the packs of wild dogs that hunt through this area. Following on foot behind a big elephant bull as it makes way through the day is also a great way to spend some safari time.

26 June
Today you leave the bush camp and head to a new and contrasting camp for the last day/ night of your safari.
Set in the most remote part of Mana Pools is the Kanga Pan, not too far from Chitake Springs. The 12-bedded tented camp has en-suite bathroom facilities with outdoor showers and basins overlooking the water hole. The main area has a comfortable lounge and dining area offering you uninterrupted views of a very active water hole. Relax in the upper deck lounge under the shade of a mahogany or sit on the deck below near the splash pool and enjoy Kanga.

The diverse area has multiple vlei lines, river systems of the Ruckomechi River, and mixed woodland types from Mopane woodland to Jesse bush and riverine forests. Kanga Pan itself is the only known water source in the area available throughout the year, making it a hub for wildlife and a delight to explore on foot. Pristine and undeveloped, this area gives you a pure, unspoilt, private African safari experience.

Besides game drives, bird watching and walking excursions, an hour’s drive brings you to the Zambezi flood plains in Mana Pools for canoeing and fishing excursions with an overall view of the inland and riverside habitats
