This safari has to be one of the most unique wildlife and cultural experience's you can hope to have. A walking safari through some of Kenya’s most beautiful landscapes amongst fantastic wildlife and led by Masai guides. We have received fantastic feed back from our clients who have been on these safaris and we regard them as one of our best safaris for the cultural experience and wildlife encounters.
With luck you will encounter a wide variety of game including the "Big Five", over 420 species of birds, Reticulated Giraffe, Cheetah, numerous different antelopes, and endangered species such as the Grevy's Zebra and Sitatunga, may be seen. Although accompanied by camels it is more a walking than riding journey and only a basic level of fitness is required as walking is not too strenuous.
Professional guides lead these walking safaris starting on the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, recognized as one of Africa’s top safari destinations. The walking route runs across Lewa through Il Ng’wesi and ends at Lekurruki, with all 5 nights spent camping out under the stars.
You will traverse a variety of ecosystems, experiencing the diversity of flora and fauna that the areas have to offer. The focus of the safari is learning about the ecosystems As well as the local Masai culture. You will be taught tracking techniques and other vital bush skills, as well as how to identify and understand the behaviour of the insects, plants, and animals you come across. Local Maasai morani (warriors) will join the guests to give insight Into traditional Maasai customs.
Walking is done in the cool hours of the day from 0730 to 1200, usually four to five hours. We rest up during the heat of the day and another walk is done in the evening exploring the areas around camp, for sundowners, before returning to camp for a shower and dinner around the open fire before falling asleep in tents under the stars to the sound of the bush, watched over by an Askari. This is a walking safari supported by camels, however camels can be ridden when the terrain or route allows.
