A wildlife photographic safari to Zambia's beautiful Luangwa Valley, home to varied and interesting wildlife and spectacular birds. Staying in a combination of luxury safari lodge and rustic bush camps with a small group of people with similar interests in wildlife and photography. What could be better?
Your guide Drew Burnett who is an accomplished professional wildlife photographer (www.wildeyephotos.co.uk), is delighted to be able to introduce a small number of guests to his favourite African wildlife destination. Drew will be leading just two safaris during Sept/Oct 2012, suitable for photographers of all experience levels. These are small group safaris with just a maximum of 6 guests to ensure clients have the time and space to get the most from their experience. Drew will help build your photographic knowledge and assist in getting those perfect wildlife shots.
You will be able to enjoy full days enjoying your photography and wonderful surroundings in the bush and back in camp, with relaxed evenings reviewing the days photography or simply enjoying the amazing African night sky and sounds of the bush.
Sept & Oct are the height of the dry season in Zambia when the drama of the dry season takes hold and the struggle to survive intensifies. Hippo fight for space and the time that the strikingly beautiful Carmine Bee eaters return to breed in colonies on the sandy river banks.
The combination of two contrasting camps used on these safaris allow guests to experience a mix of both vehicle based game drives and walking safaris. Both offer completely different game viewing experiences and wonderful photographic opportunities.
The vehicle based activities are based at the spectacular Kafunta River Lodge which offers luxury safari accommodation, staying in safari chalets overlooking a drying flood plain which has a waterhole fed by a natural hot spring which constantly draws wildlife in to view from the camp. Kafunta is perfectly placed to explore the incredibly game rich Mfuwe sector of the South Luangwa, where amongst the myriad of antelope species and Elephant are some of the best chances of Leopard sightings anywhere in Africa.
Kafunta’s “Island Bush Camp” is a small and very remote rustic safari camp where guest stay in open thatched stilted chalets overlooking the Luangwa river heaving with Hippo. This is our base for our walking safaris. This is our chance to take photos from a different perspective, with the chance of big game sighting but also the smaller species and flora.
Drew is a firm believer in learning in the field and ensures that his groups make the most of their days seeing as much as possible. He is always available to assist with technical matters and compositional tips.
Drews understanding of animal behavior ensures that you will get the best out of each wildlife encounter. Drew is assisted throughout by the very best local guides with an encyclopedic knowledge of the bush and also an armed ranger (on walking safaris).
Days begin before sunrise to ensure guests get the best of the morning light and wildlife activity. Typically we return to the camp for brunch followed by some free time during the hottest part of the day where guests can review the mornings work or enjoy the relaxed surroundings of the camp.
Later in the afternoon and it is back out into the bush for an evening game drive or walking safari as the sun sinks staying out into the evening with the chance to encounter nocturnal species, once again making the most of peak wildlife activity times and light before returning back to camp for aperitifs by the campfire and dinner under the stars.
Notes:
Game drives are taken in custom built open 4x4 safari vehicles with ample room and no visual restrictions.
Power to charge batteries is available at both camps.
